The working.
- 1Angle off the runway: wind 310 against runway 270 is 40 degrees, from the right.
- 2Along = 22 x cos 40 = 16.9 kt.
- 3Across = 22 x sin 40 = 14.1 kt.
The wind in a METAR is degrees true and the runway is degrees magnetic. Apply the local variation before you compare them, or the angle above is wrong by the variation.
