Induction, compression, power and exhaust: the four stroke cycle underlies every piston engine question. Here it comes with valve timing, tappets, crankshaft and camshaft, and the efficiencies used to rate an engine.
Several of the 55 questions are short sums for compression ratio, firing interval or crankshaft turns, beside definitions of volumetric efficiency and specific fuel consumption. Exam sessions have selected 3 from this set.
Compression ratio is total cylinder volume over clearance volume, not swept over total. A full cycle takes two crankshaft revolutions, and the camshaft turns at half crankshaft speed. Too little tappet clearance can stop a valve seating; too much makes it open late and close early.
