How to become a pilot in India after 12th

Straight out of school, the first real decision is the route, and all three cost the better part of a crore once the type rating and living costs are in. The first steps cost very little.

Which subjects do I need after 12th?

Physics and Mathematics at 10+2. With English.
If you do not have them. Add the two subjects through an open-schooling board. A commerce or arts stream delays you by some months and does not rule you out.
Age. A commercial licence is not issued below eighteen. Medicals, the Computer Number and the papers can all be underway before then.

Cadet programmes. Set their own age bands and minimum marks in Physics, Mathematics and English, and change them between intakes.
Open schooling. Apply to the board yourself. Agents who charge per subject are a trap students warn each other about.

The own route costs least on paper and gives you the most control, and every risk stays with you: a slow school, the type rating decision and the wait for a job.

A cadet programme is paid for by your family, not the airline. The extra money buys a fixed timetable and the airline's own type rating, and cadets who complete it join the airline as First Officers. The offer comes as a letter of intent (LOI), which is not a legal guarantee, but the airlines have hired their cadets. ALPA India, the pilots' association, said in July 2026 that cadet bonds run three years or more.

Abroad suits a student who can spend a year away and wants to fly faster, if the conversion months and the rupee are in the plan.

How families usually pay

By students' own accounts, the common pattern is savings of ₹30 lakh to ₹50 lakhReported and an education loan for the rest, at around 9.5 to 10 per cent.

What to do in your first year out of school

Keep a degree going alongside, by distance if need be, so a delay or a medical problem later does not leave you with nothing. Sign nothing because a counsellor says seats are filling up.
