Altimeter: DGCA Air Navigation questions
Your pressure altimeter is a barometer with its scale marked in feet. As you climb, the capsules swell and a train of levers drives the pointers round. It comes up often in the Air Navigation paper.
Expect 50 questions that are nearly all theory: the altimeter's errors, the servo altimeter's inductive pick-off, alternate static sources, and two static vents unbalanced by a sideslip. Exam sessions have picked 21 of these altimeter questions.
Two points catch people out. The capsule is sealed and almost empty of air, with static pressure in the case; it is the ASI's capsule that takes pitot pressure. And a blocked static source freezes the reading at the height where it blocked, while a blocked pitot leaves the altimeter untouched.
