IC Joshi, Aviation Meteorology
Vertical Motion and Clouds: DGCA Aviation Meteorology questions
Most cloud forms when rising air cools until it is saturated, and the way the air rises, gently in sheets or violently in convection, sets the shape of the cloud and what falls from it.
The 20 questions lean on identification: which genus gives drizzle, showers or continuous rain, which shows a halo, what lenticular forms mean, and the ICAO meaning of ceiling. Exam sessions have featured 12 of them.
Drizzle falls from stratus or thin stratocumulus, steady rain from nimbostratus, and showers only from cumuliform cloud. Ceiling counts only a layer covering more than half the sky, so scattered cloud beneath it does not set the ceiling.
