Winds: DGCA Aviation Meteorology questions
Wind is air moving in answer to pressure differences, turned by the rotation of the Earth and slowed by friction near the ground. You use it for drift, runway choice and most charts you read, and it comes up often in the paper.
Most of the 45 questions are short completion statements on Buys Ballot's law, Coriolis force, geostrophic wind and local winds such as sea breezes and katabatic flows. A few ask for a thermal wind from two levels. DGCA sessions have carried 17 of this set.
Veering is a clockwise change of direction and backing an anticlockwise one, in either hemisphere. The thermal wind is the upper wind minus the lower wind as vectors.
