Clouds: DGCA Aviation Meteorology questions

Clouds are sorted by the height of their base into low, medium and high families, and by their form into heaps and layers. Read well, they tell you about stability, icing and turbulence.

The 39 questions mix classification by level, typical medium cloud bases in summer, which clouds give hail, snow, drizzle or showers, what weather radar detects, and stable against unstable lapse rates. The exam record includes 8 of this chapter's questions.

Classify by the base, not the top: cumulonimbus counts as low cloud even when its anvil reaches cirrus level. Castellanus in the middle levels signals instability up there, not at the surface.
