Which book to start with
DGCA's own study material list credits RK Bali for Air Regulations, Trevor Thom for Air Navigation, IC Joshi for Aviation Meteorology, the Oxford series across several subjects, and Keith Williams for navigation and instruments.
"Start with" means the book that carries the largest share of the questions we hold for that paper, counted live. It is not a claim about which book is better written.
What to skip
- A summary of a set text. Reading around the books the papers are drawn from is how you end up answering a question the exam did not ask.
- A second book on a paper the first one carries. Use it for the topics it covers more fully, not as a second pass over the same ground.
- A free PDF of past questions with no working. A wrong answer with no working is a wasted question, and the working is what a PDF cannot give you.
Four steps to a reading order
- 1Start from what DGCA's own study material list credits
Start with the books DGCA's own list names, above.
- 2Know which RK Bali a student means
RK Bali also wrote the market-standard Air Navigation text. When students say "RK Bali Navigation" they mean a real and widely used book, even though the official list names Trevor Thom for that paper.
Ask which paper a book is for before you buy it.
- 3Read the book that carries the largest share of the paper first
If a paper has two books close together, read the first and use the second for the topics it covers more fully.
- 4Open the chapter before you buy the book
Each book page lists every chapter of that book with the number of questions inside it, and many chapter pages show free sample questions in full, with their options and the correct answer marked.
