PANS-OPS is the ICAO document that sets out how instrument procedures are designed and flown. Its rules sit behind the altimeter settings, transponder codes and holding patterns you use under IFR.
The 102 questions here range wider than procedure design. Altimeter setting around the transition altitude and level takes a large share, with SSR codes, ACAS, holding entries and timings, and departure and approach basics. Exam sessions have featured 22 of these questions.
Watch the direction of each altimeter change. Climbing, you set 1013.25 hPa at the transition altitude; descending, you set QNH at the transition level. In the transition layer, a climbing aircraft reports flight levels and a descending one reports altitude.
