DC Electrics - Batteries: DGCA Technical General questions

The battery starts the engines and gives an emergency supply if the generators fail. Two types matter: the lead acid cell, with sulphuric acid electrolyte, and the alkaline nickel cadmium cell, with potassium hydroxide.

Most of the 30 questions deal with cell voltage, specific gravity, capacity in ampere hours and batteries joined together. Exam sessions have used 1 of these battery questions.

In series, voltages add and capacity stays that of one battery; in parallel, voltage stays the same and capacities add. A lead acid cell is nominally 2 volts and an alkaline cell 1.2 volts. Specific gravity shows a lead acid cell's charge, but in an alkaline cell it barely changes and tells you little.
