Piston Engines - Fuel: DGCA Technical General questions
Piston engines burn AVGAS, and a good fuel has the right volatility, a high calorific value and strong resistance to knocking. Grades are named by their anti-knock values and told apart by dye colour.
The 16 questions are mainly definitions, with a fuel weight sum from specific gravity and a few on grade colours. Exam sittings have included 1 of them.
Detonation is explosive burning of the end gas after normal ignition; pre-ignition is the mixture lighting before the spark, from a hot spot. In a grade such as 100/130, the first figure is the weak mixture rating and the second the rich. AVGAS 100LL is blue and AVGAS 100 green.
