Meteorological

Phrase 1 of 12Meteorological

Request METAR

Ask ATC for the latest weather report at your destination, your alternate or an aerodrome near your route. Read back the QNH; the rest is information.

The pattern
You say

station, callsign, request aerodrome weather (or METAR)

ATC says

callsign, station, aerodrome weather at time, surface wind direction degrees speed knots, visibility distance, weather, cloud amount height, temperature number, dew point number, QNH value, trend

Example
  • You

Mumbai Approach, IFLY 160, request Mumbai weather

  • ATC

IFLY 160, Mumbai Approach, Mumbai weather at zero five three zero, surface wind one eight zero degrees two zero knots, visibility two thousand metres, haze, cloud few cumulus three thousand feet, temperature three zero, dew point two six, QNH one zero one zero, no significant change

  • You

QNH one zero one zero, IFLY 160

Remember
  • ATC gives you the weather at your departure, destination and alternate aerodromes as part of flight information service (MATS 9.1.2.2 a).
  • The items come in the order of an ATIS: wind, visibility, weather, cloud, temperature, dew point, QNH, then the trend (MATS 9.1.5.7.2.2, 12.16.1.8).
  • Visibility and cloud height use THOUSAND and HUNDRED (MATS 12.5.2). Read back the QNH, as every altimeter setting is (MATS 12.9.4).
  • On the radio, name the aerodrome in plain words, Mumbai, not its four-letter code.

Now say it out loud, with the examiner playing ATC.
