Earth Magnetism: DGCA Air Navigation questions
The Earth's magnetic field gives the compass its north, but magnetic north is not true north, and the gap changes with place and slowly with time. Variation, dip and the lines that map them belong here, with the heading arithmetic every flight plan uses.
Most of the 28 questions are conversions between true, magnetic and compass heading using variation and deviation. The rest define the agonic line, isogonals, dip and the magnetic equator. Exam sessions have carried 1 of these.
Work true to magnetic to compass. West is added, east subtracted. Never apply deviation to a true heading. Written as plus or minus, a plus deviation means east.
