Arrival and approach

Phrase 1 of 23Arrival and approach

First call to Approach

Make this call when en route control hands you over to Approach. Give your position and level, then the ATIS letter you copied. If you have no ATIS, ask for the landing information instead.

The pattern
You say

station, callsign, position, level, information atis letter (or, with no ATIS, request landing information)

ATC says

callsign, station, runway in use number, surface wind direction degrees speed knots, visibility or rvr, QNH value (or, with the ATIS acknowledged, your descent and QNH only)

Example
  • You

Mumbai Approach, IFLY 160, four zero miles north of Mumbai, flight level one two zero, request landing information

  • ATC

IFLY 160, Mumbai Approach, runway in use two seven, surface wind two four zero degrees one two knots, RVR two thousand metres, QNH one thousand

  • You

Runway in use two seven, QNH one thousand, IFLY 160

Remember
  • Say the ATIS letter on your first call to Approach or Tower. ATC then leaves out what the ATIS already told you, except the QNH (MATS 9.1.5.7.2.1 vii and xi).
  • ATC gives you the QNH when it first clears you to an altitude below the transition level (MATS 9.1.5.7.2.1 viii).
  • If the letter you quote is no longer current, ATC tells you to listen to the current ATIS (MATS 9.1.5.7.2.1 xii).
  • Read back the runway in use and the QNH; wind and RVR are information (MATS 12.9.4).
  • REQUEST LANDING INFORMATION is plain wording: MATS prints no form for it.

Now say it out loud, with the examiner playing ATC.
